Origin and history

The houses and tower of Mirault are located at numbers 11, 13 and 13bis of Place du Palais, in the historic centre of Avignon. This monument, whose facades and tower were protected by a decree of May 16, 1927, illustrates medieval civil architecture of the city of popes. The inscription in the Historic Monuments specifically concerns the facades, roofs of houses and the tower, highlighting their heritage value in the urban landscape of Avignon.

Avignon, then the capital of Christendom in the Middle Ages, concentrated a diverse population where nobles, clerics and artisans lived. Bourgeois houses like those of Mirault often reflected the social status of their owners, while towers served as both a symbol of power and a defensive system. Although the archives do not specify the identity of the first lords or owners, this type of construction bears witness to the gradual urbanization of the city between the 12th and 15th centuries.

Today, the monument remains a material testimony of this time, although its access and contemporary uses (visit, rental) are not documented in the available sources. The exact location, confirmed by the Merimée and Monumentum bases, makes it a point of interest in the preserved area around the Palace of the Popes, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
